7 ways to tell if you have poor gut health
Gut health is a hot topic these days. More and more research is being done on the topic of gut health and the connection to many health issues. We may treat or try to manage the symptoms but still fail to get to the root of the problem.
When weeding the garden we have to be certain we get the entire root of the unwanted plant. If the root is left in the ground the plant will just grow back.
In our physical bodies, it is equally important to get to the root of the problem. This quite often leads us to the gut.
But how do we know if we suffer from poor gut health?
If you can relate to any of the items on the following list then you may actually be suffering the result of poor gut health.
- Constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating
This one is fairly obvious since it is experienced in the gut itself. When things are not functioning correctly the body is unable to eliminate waste effectively.
- Fatigue
Serotonin is produced in the gut. When the gut is not healthy the body won’t produce enough and the result will be sleeplessness and fatigue.
- Low immune system
80% of the immune system is in the gut. Poor gut health will hinder the body’s ability to fight off illness. Thus, a low immune system can be a direct result of poor gut health.
- Moodiness, anxiety, depression
The gut is now being called the second brain. There is a lot of study being done about the presence of certain good bacteria in the gut and mental health.
- Sugar cravings
Sugar causes the balance of good flora and bad flora within the gut to be damaged. The more damage that is done the more sugar your body will crave. If you have ever tried to exert self-control and not eat that candy bar only to find yourself devouring it…Your gut may be bossing you around!
- Eczema
The body will find a way to rid itself of toxins. When the gut is not functioning correctly toxins can leak out of the gut and the end result can be eczema.
- Diabetes and Autoimmune issues
The gut microbiome is filled with good bacteria that helps regulate the body systems. When certain gut bacteria are not present the body is not able to function correctly. If you are dealing with either of these issues poor gut health may be a contributing factor.
These things are an indicator that something is amiss in the gut. They are an alarm clock telling us to pay attention to our gut health.
