Personal Spiritual Growth
There have been times over the years when I realized that I was stagnate in my own personal spiritual growth. I was so busy changing diapers, wiping snotty noses and cooking endlessly that I had neglected my own personal spiritual growth. This lack of spiritual food in my own life had a significant impact on the kind of mother and wife I was.
I thought to myself…I’ll get up early and have a few moments alone.
The kids must have had secret radars because the earlier I got up the earlier they did too! It was a wash!
When I was pregnant with our youngest a dear friend gave me a guitar. That guitar was one of the best gifts I have ever received. It was a lifeline to something beautiful and refreshing. I decided that I was going to learn to play it but how was I going to squeeze that into my already busy days. I made a commitment to myself that I would not go to bed until I had put my fingers on my guitar for 30 minutes every day.
You may be wondering what this has to do with growing spiritually. For me, that was my special time with the Lord. I played worship songs and once I had learned the mechanics of playing I would spend 30 minutes worshipping and praying. I had some beautiful times with the Lord that refreshed me spiritually. These sweet times led to a hunger for more and I found the time to read the Bible as well.

And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
I took my job as a mother very seriously. In this passage, I am being told to teach spiritual things to my children.
I am a firm believer that you cannot teach what you do not know. I must lead by example. My children must see me growing spiritually if I want them to grow spiritually too. In order to teach spiritual things to my kids, I must grow spiritually.
It is not enough to just take my kids to church. I have to actually live my faith 24/7 and teach my kids to do the same.
